The challenge here lies in creating a compelling music video for a well known South African artist. This involves integrating mixed media techniques and narrative direction to create a music video that informs the message and nature of the song. The song in question: Doen Drugs by Jack Parow.
The objective is to produce a visually striking music video that complements the chosen artist's music and style. This includes crafting a concise narrative that aligns with the song's mood and message, experimenting with mixed media techniques to enhance storytelling, and ensuring the visuals capture and maintain the audience's attention.
The solution for this project involved developing narrative that enhances the song's message, and making use of animation and motion graphics to create a visually striking experience.
Jack Parow is a South African rapper known for his unique blend of Afrikaans rap and humorous, over-the-top persona. He gained fame with his signature look, including an exaggeratedly long baseball cap, and his music often features catchy, upbeat tracks mixed with playful and provocative lyrics.
Jack Parow’s style draws from South African culture, incorporating a mix of humor, bravado, and storytelling that has made him a standout figure in the local and international music scene.
The storyboards were intended to serve as a loose guide rather than a rigid blueprint, providing flexibility during production to allow for spontaneous creativity and adjustments based on the energy and feel of the scenes as they were brought to life.
The design concept was driven by the creation of a music video with the following aspects to it: the music video should be visually appealing, it should something that can be enjoyed in the 'background' or be enjoyed as a primary focus for a few minutes. The design of the following elements will be justified in the pages that follow.
In the beginning of the music video there a woman complaining about something in a manner that is reminiscent of a 'grouchy old person'. The phone was designed in this older style to emboddy the outdated outlook that some people have on life.
the main character of my animation has been designed to be a parody/representation of Jack parow himself as he portrays himself in the song "Doen drugs". the untied shoe laces, tank top, spill on the tank top, pink eyes and darker color tones are all meant to portray the dark and crass nature of the character.
the element here has been designed to be dark and scary and enters the scene as such. He is scared off when he comes face to face with the main character, following the lyrics of the song. this interaction shows just how hectic the main charcter is, following the lyrics of the song.
the tail and horns flash between frames specifically when the singer says the words "demoon" and "monster". they flash between frames to indicate the shrewd nature of the character in question.
the youth here was designed to represent the influencable youth that this character is going to corrupt. The characrter appears after the song lyric: "hy's a demoon, hier om jou kids te possess", this character represents the kids. The character was designed to be a generic representation of an corruptable young male.
After the main character sees the generic youth, he jumps into his head. the video then becomes more abstract. Once in the mental landscape of the boy (represented by the brain floor) the main character sees this girl. This girl is meant to represent the girl that the boy likes, she is standing on the 'brain floor' beacause she is on his mind. the main character then rips her in half and snorts her skeleton to show how hectic he is. She was designed to be generic and simple (to match the boy).
the skeleton here represents death and darker nature of the song and the main character. The design style as a whole revolving around these concepts.
The scene clears and starts adding element after element to build the collage (alongside image). The elements are made from real life objects that have been converted to colored vector layers with altered opacity. The scene is meant to resprent all aspects of life, this evaluation of reality was incited by the main character peeling off the viewport and taking it as an acid tab.
The dog represents the rough nature of the character. The human head scan represent the idea of health. The iris of the eye represent the idea of a deity. The sailor is meant to represent a 'sailor's life' the male figure alongside the woman and dog making a referenece to the idea of family. The beer bottle respresents the abuse of alcohol.
the snake represents deceit and cunning. the old women represent a south african 'tannie' relating to afrikaans culture. the banana, cherry and silhouette of the nude woman relate to the idea of sexuality. The fire and joker mask relate to the chaotic naure of the character.
the spider was included because jack parow is arachnophobic.
after the video has moved further away from narrative and more toward abstraction ,dark versions of the main character appear. The dark colour, spiralling eyes and floating heads are meant to set a disorientating scene , relating to the psychedelics mentions in the song lyrics.
the line begins animating from the top right and draws image after image. The motion rotating clockwise and spiralling inwards. The images all relate to substance use as referenced in the song, until it reaches the last aspect which is a word. The word is "piele" ,the animation is timed so that this appears as it is mention in the song lyrics (last word). This scene is a calmer end to a stimulating video.
All aspects of the animation were defined during a process of experimentation. full creative freedom was given to the designer so it was not required to follow a strict visual script. All animations and effects were defined with the following principles in mind.
the animation and effects should reflect the nature of the song
the animation and effects should at times be synced to specific audio cues
on a general scale, the animation should relate to the lyrics of the song
the intended audience for this project are all the fans of Jak Parow and all those who are interested in visually captivating animations.
